Science Workshop in S5EN and S5FR

On 31 st January, Classes 5E and 5F did experiments on FORCES. Our class was split into four groups. There were four stations which each group had to visit.

The first station was The Magic Bounce. At this station you had several different balls all of different materials. First, we bounced all the balls off the linoleum floor and then we had to bounce them off the carpet. We had to see which balls bounced higher.

There was also The Friction Board. At this station there was a board with several different surfaces. There were little blocks of wood which we tried to let slide down the surfaces. Because of friction on some surfaces, the wood wouldn’t slide. There were also cars which we let slide down the surfaces. The cars went down a lot quicker than the wooden blocks.

The next station was The Vacuum Candle. This station was there to show us how pressure worked. We had a jar, a candle, a plate with coloured water, two coins and matches. We put two coins on the plate near enough so the jar could sit on them.

After that we placed a small candle in the middle of the two coins. We lit it and put the jar over it. What happened was amazing! As the candle burnt the oxygen in the jar, the water rose because the air in the jar didn’t have enough pressure to keep the water out.

We repeated the process with a bigger candle. The same thing happened, except that the water rose higher, because the bigger candle needed more oxygen.

At the end, we did the same without a candle and then saw that the water was pushed out.
